Clifton, NJ - More like a small city, Clifton in Passaic County --with a highly diverse population of about 80,000 over 11 square miles -- straddles the northern borders of the Essex County towns of Montclair, Bloomfield, and Nutley. Its large school system, known for its award-winning marching band and sports far more than its academics, serves some 11,000 students. The town has lots of shopping opportunities in multiple locations, including Clifton Commons, Promenade Shops, and a Costco. The rolling hills of the Upper Montclair Country Club are on the edge of the town. One train station and many buses serve Manhattan commuters. Clifton also shares part of the Montclair State University campus with neighboring Upper Montclair and Little Falls. The area closest to Montclair -- Montclair Heights -- is also generally considered Clifton’s most expensive residential neighborhood, while Richfield and Allwood, among other, offer more modest homes at affordable prices.
